Medical misinformation on social media: how can it be addressed?
Medical misinformation online is a growing phenomenon and a topic of increasing discussion within the scientific community. While in the past medical and scientific information was primarily disseminated through conferences and publications in specialized journals, today information exchange actively involves the general public and lacks a structured filtering or review system by expert clinicians and academics.
The ability to freely comment on, criticize, and discuss information online creates an information overload, often involving conflicting viewpoints. As a result, it becomes extremely difficult for the average user to distinguish scientific evidence from false information.
Fact-checking and fact-sharing score: two tools to combat misinformation
Given the complexity of misinformation, addressing this challenge requires a multimodal approach involving scientific experts, social media platform providers, and users themselves.
One possible solution is the introduction of a fact-checking system. Under such a model, medical and scientific posts could be flagged for review by a qualified subject-matter expert (for example, an immunology professor in the case of posts discussing vaccines).
After critically evaluating the content, the expert would provide a brief response summarizing the available scientific evidence in clear and accessible language, supported by appropriate bibliographic references. The post could then be labeled as “Reviewed Content” to indicate that it has undergone expert evaluation.
Given the enormous scale of the internet, this system would likely be feasible only on major platforms and limited to medical or scientific posts that have achieved a certain level of visibility through comments, shares, or likes.
At the same time, users themselves could be encouraged to pay greater attention to the information they share by introducing a fact-sharing score that reflects the frequency with which they share “Reviewed” content and, more broadly, their commitment to sharing verified information.
Using social media for proactive scientific communication
In addition to limiting the spread of incorrect information, it is essential to use the power of the internet to promote accurate scientific communication.
Medical and scientific journals could adopt a more proactive approach by using their social media channels to publish engaging content and stimulate discussions on scientific topics. Likewise, public health education campaigns could be developed, potentially involving influencers, to help the general public understand concepts such as peer review and the importance of bibliographic sources as indicators of scientific reliability.
Furthermore, healthcare and scientific professionals should actively participate in public education efforts. It is important to identify skilled science communicators who can serve as trusted points of reference and are capable of translating complex scientific concepts into information that is accessible to everyone.
Through initiatives such as these, it is hoped that over time society will develop a more informed and scientifically aware public, capable of contributing directly to the reduction of medical misinformation from the ground up.
