Reporting adverse drug reactions in clinical practice and during the post-marketing phase represents the foundation of pharmacovigilance. However, it is well known that limitations exist in reporting activities by both patients and healthcare professionals. Therefore, it is essential to provide physicians responsible for prescribing and administering medicines with the tools and knowledge necessary<\/strong> not only to report ADRs when appropriate, but above all to recognize and potentially prevent them, supporting safer and more informed prescribing practices.<\/p>\n

Key objectives of a pharmacovigilance training program<\/strong><\/p>\n

A pharmacovigilance training program for medical students and residents should include key concepts that enable current and future physicians to be aware of ADRs, understand them, and report them when necessary.<\/p>\n

Awareness<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

First and foremost, physicians must be aware that no medicine is 100% safe<\/strong> and that all medicinal products have the potential to cause ADRs. It is also important to understand that adverse reactions may occur immediately after administration or appear much later, that their type and severity may vary between individuals, that some patients may be more vulnerable because of age, sex, disease, or genetic susceptibility, and that not all ADRs encountered in clinical practice are listed in the package leaflet.<\/p>\n

The key message for physicians is therefore to always consider ADRs in the differential diagnosis of any new condition, symptom, or clinical sign occurring during or after drug treatment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally, physicians should be aware of particularly rare, severe, or potentially fatal ADRs<\/strong> associated with commonly prescribed medicines (for example antibiotics, NSAIDs, or anticonvulsants), thereby helping to prevent medication-related errors and inappropriate prescribing practices.<\/p>\n

Knowledge<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

To avoid common ADRs, physicians need a solid understanding of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions<\/strong> of frequently prescribed medicines as well as widely used over-the-counter drugs.<\/p>\n

Healthcare professionals must also know how to identify and manage previously unknown ADRs<\/strong>, recognize a potential causal association with the suspected medicine, and decide whether treatment should be modified, reduced, or discontinued.<\/p>\n

In addition, physicians should be familiar with the most common medical errors\u2014particularly prescribing errors\u2014in order to prevent and manage them effectively.<\/p>\n

Reporting<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to understanding the basic principles of ADR reporting<\/strong>, physicians should recognize the scientific and regulatory importance of pharmacovigilance reporting<\/strong> and understand how the identification of new safety signals can lead to updates of product information, new safety warnings, or even the withdrawal of medicines from the market.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, both spontaneous reports and formal pharmacovigilance studies can provide valuable information about the relationship between symptoms, clinical signs, diseases, and medicinal products.<\/p>\n

Personalized learning pathways and continuous education<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pharmacovigilance training should take into account the specific characteristics of each country<\/strong>, including healthcare priorities, available resources, population characteristics, and locally prevalent genetic factors.<\/p>\n

Teaching methods should also be tailored as much as possible. For example, the discussion and resolution of real clinical cases<\/strong>, including cases proposed directly by students, may be more effective than a traditional lecture-based approach.<\/p>\n

Finally, it is essential to organize periodic refresher training programs<\/strong>, allowing experienced physicians to address more complex topics and advanced pharmacovigilance concepts.<\/p>\n

Beyond the information provided during training, the primary objective of these educational programs is to change physicians\u2019 attitudes toward ADRs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Adverse drug reactions should no longer be viewed simply as an inevitable consequence of pharmacological treatment. Instead, they require a proactive approach from healthcare professionals<\/strong>, enabling them to identify and manage individual reactions, avoid overprescribing and polypharmacy, modify treatments when ADRs are suspected, and recognize and report prescribing errors when they occur.<\/p>\n
